Pioneering Contribution in the field of ‘’Bio-gas Technology’’ by Globally Renowned Indian Scientist

Dr. Ram Bux Singh was an internationally acclaimed scientist whose pioneering work in the non-conventional energy sector, particularly in biogas utility, left an indelible mark on the world. Born in a middle-class family in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, he pursued a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Asia Engineering Institute, Delhi, and later obtained a Postgraduate degree from Pacific Western University, California, which also conferred upon him honorary doctorates for his contributions to technological research.

Global Impact on Renewable Energy

Dr. Singh’s research and innovations in biogas technology were instrumental in promoting sustainable energy solutions across 15 countries, including the USA, Germany, Mexico, Denmark, Iran, Nepal, and Canada. His groundbreaking work in capturing methane emissions from cattle dung revolutionised the biogas sector, making him a globally recognized expert in the field.

Milestones and Contributions

  • India’s First Biogas Plant (1957): Dr. Singh designed and established India’s first “Gobar Gas” plant in Ramnagar, Sitapur, on 9th September 1957, as reported in the National Herald (13.10.1957).
  • Asia’s First Gobar Gas Research Station (1960): He played a key role in setting up and leading research at the Gobar Gas Research Station in Ajitmal, Uttar Pradesh, where he worked for 16 years.
  • U.S.A.’s First Biogas Plant (1972): He designed and established the first biogas plant in the U.S. at Ral-Jim-Farm, Vermont, inaugurated by Senator Mike Gravel (Fairhaven Gazette, 02.08.1972).
  • Technological Innovations: Dr. Singh developed advanced chemical procedures to accelerate fermentation, improving the efficiency of biogas production and making it a viable energy source worldwide.
  • Construction of Over 200 Low-Cost Digesters: His designs converted plant and animal waste into manure and methane, making biogas accessible to rural communities. Mother Earth News credited him with constructing more biogas generators than anyone else globally.

International Recognition & Collaborations

Dr. Singh’s research attracted the attention of global leaders and institutions. His work was personally observed by dignitaries, including President V.V. Giri, UN representatives, and energy experts from the U.S., Denmark, and Canada.

He represented India thrice as a Biogas Consultant for the United Nations:

  1. International Biogas Workshop (New Delhi, 1975) – Organised by ESCAP (UN body) in collaboration with the Government of India.
  2. Mission to Central America (1980) – Provided expertise in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, and Costa Rica.
  3. Biogas Mission to Ecuador (1981) – Conducted a three-month research initiative.

Additionally, he worked as a consultant with governments and institutions, including:

  • U.S. Department of Agriculture (1978–1980)
  • Government of Denmark, Holland, and Germany
  • Instituto De Energia, Ecuador
  • Norvestjysk Folkecenter, Denmark

Legacy & Recognition

Dr. Singh’s pioneering work was acknowledged in U.S. Senate proceedings (29.05.1973), where senators, including Mike Gravel, advocated federal funding for biogas development. Scientific journals extensively covered his contributions, including Mother Earth News, Whole Earth Catalog, and Architectural Design.

Recognizing his expertise, the U.S. government granted him permanent resident status and a Green Card. His innovations inspire sustainable energy initiatives worldwide, cementing his legacy as a trailblazer in renewable energy.
