Since its establishment in 2007, READ India has been working as a registered non-profit trust with a clear and impactful mission, to build community-led library and resource centres across rural India. These centres are more than just spaces with books; they are hubs of learning, equipped with IT resources and skill-building tools, designed to foster education, empowerment, and sustainable development. With a presence in 14 states and outreach to over 250 villages, READ India has created a strong grassroots network that respects local culture while promoting dignity and self-reliance.
At the heart of READ India’s work lies a deep commitment to building resilient communities. Through careful feasibility studies and baseline surveys, the organisation identifies local needs and tailors interventions accordingly. Its approach is rooted in engaging, enabling, educating, and empowering individuals, especially women and girls, by enhancing their existing skills and unlocking new opportunities.
Addressing Gender Inequality Through Skill Development
In many rural areas, young girls and women continue to face social suppression and limited access to growth opportunities. Recognising this gap, READ India launched the Skills to Succeed programme in 2015. Initially introduced in five locations, the programme has since expanded to over 20 locations across 14 states, reaching more than 55,000 women.
The programme is designed to bring opportunities directly to the doorstep of underserved communities. It focuses on helping women understand their roles within the social fabric while equipping them with practical skills that enable economic independence and personal growth. By reskilling local resource persons and transforming them into experts and trainers, READ India has successfully scaled its impact from hundreds to thousands of beneficiaries.
Creating Sustainable Livelihoods and Entrepreneurs
One of the most remarkable outcomes of the Skills to Succeed initiative is the transformation of women into entrepreneurs. Women who were once confined to household responsibilities are now actively participating in income-generating activities. They are producing and selling goods such as handwoven textiles, grass baskets, herbal products, and traditional handicrafts, contributing not only to their families but also to the local economy.
These efforts have led to:
- Increased financial independence among women
- Enhanced decision-making power within households
- Improved standard of living for families
- Reduced migration to urban areas
- Stronger community cohesion and support systems
The programme has also fostered a sense of identity and confidence among women. Many have become role models in their communities, motivating others to pursue skill development and economic participation.
Building Community Through Learning and Collaboration
Over the past decade, READ India has established more than 60 libraries, providing access to over 100,000 books and empowering more than half a million community members through workshops and training sessions. These community-led initiatives have created a network of learners, trainers, and leaders who collaborate to sustain and expand the impact.
The programme caters to different age groups:
- Young women (15–25 years): Guided to explore their potential and build purposeful careers
- Women (26–45 years): Trained to start micro-enterprises or seek employment opportunities
In addition, children of these women benefit from access to libraries, ensuring that education and development extend across generations.
Driving Social Change and Sustainable Development
Beyond economic gains, the programme has brought about significant social transformation. Women are gaining respect within their families and communities, becoming key contributors and decision-makers. During challenging times such as the COVID-19 pandemic, many women emerged as financial pillars of their households.
The initiative also aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting a green economy through eco-friendly products and sustainable practices. Third-party social impact assessments have validated the effectiveness of READ India’s interventions, reinforcing confidence in scaling the model nationwide.
A Vision for the Future
READ India’s Skills to Succeed programme demonstrates how community-driven initiatives can create lasting change. By focusing on education, skill development, and empowerment, the organisation is not only transforming individual lives but also reshaping entire communities.
The journey so far highlights a powerful shift in mindset—where rural families now prioritise education, skill-building, and financial independence, especially for women and girls. With strong community ties and a proven model for replication, READ India is well-positioned to expand its impact across the country.
In empowering women, READ India is empowering entire communities, building a future where resilience, dignity, and opportunity are accessible to all.
