More Than Home: How Anandalok Is Building Independence, Dignity and Hope

For many families of persons with intellectual disabilities, one question never stops weighing on their minds: “Who will care for them when we no longer can?”

For over three decades, Anandalok, an initiative of the Welfare Centre for the Mentally Handicapped, has been providing an answer rooted in dignity, compassion and empowerment.

Established on 7 January 1990 in Badu, Anandalok is much more than a residential facility. It is a home where adults with mild to severe intellectual disabilities are supported to develop life skills, discover their abilities and lead lives with greater independence and confidence.

More Than a Shelter: A Place to Grow

While residential care remains essential for many individuals with intellectual disabilities, Anandalok believes that care alone is not enough.

Its mission is to create an environment where every resident is encouraged to learn, work and participate meaningfully in daily life. Through structured behavioural interventions and personalised vocational training, the organisation focuses on helping individuals build practical skills suited to their capabilities.

Today, Anandalok provides residential care for its boarders while also operating a Day Care Centre that supports children and adults with intellectual disabilities from neighbouring communities.

By extending its services beyond residential care, the organisation ensures that more families have access to specialised education, skill development and therapeutic support close to home.

Unlocking Hidden Potential

Every individual has unique strengths. Recognising this, Anandalok begins by assessing the abilities, interests and learning needs of each trainee before designing personalised development plans.

Behavioural modification programmes help participants improve communication, daily living skills and social interaction, while vocational training equips them with practical abilities that foster confidence and greater self-reliance.

Rather than focusing on limitations, the organisation works to identify hidden talents and nurture them through patient guidance, structured learning and continuous encouragement.

This strengths-based approach allows many individuals to achieve levels of independence that once seemed beyond reach.

Supporting Families Through Lifelong Care

The challenges faced by families caring for persons with intellectual disabilities often extend far beyond financial concerns. Parents and caregivers frequently struggle with emotional stress, social isolation and uncertainty about their loved one’s future.

Anandalok seeks to ease that burden by providing what many families describe as a home away from home.

Residents receive a safe and supportive environment where they are cared for with respect, while families gain reassurance that their loved ones are living in a space focused not only on care but also on personal growth and wellbeing.

This partnership between families and caregivers creates a support system that extends far beyond institutional care.

Building an Inclusive Society

For over 35 years, Anandalok has quietly demonstrated that persons with intellectual disabilities should not be defined by their challenges but by their potential.

Through education, behavioural support and vocational training, the organisation enables individuals to participate more actively in society while encouraging communities to view disability through the lens of ability, inclusion and dignity.

Its work reflects an important shift, from charity to empowerment, and from dependence to opportunity.

For more than three decades, it has provided exactly that: a place where individuals are not merely cared for, but empowered to live with purpose, dignity and belonging.
